Students Carve Up a Treat at Royal Highland Show

Four Fife College culinary arts students got the chance to show-off their skills to hundreds of visitors at one of Scotland’s key events of the year, the Royal Highland Show, thanks to Quality Meat Scotland (QMS).

The students were invited to take part and help out at the Ingliston event, by former Fife College chef lecturer Scott Lyall.   

The four talented students, Eilidh Smith, 20 from Limekilns; Terri Scott, 19 from Lochgelly; Sadie Colley, 20 from Ladybank and Ben Bernard, 38 from Burntisland enjoyed preparing and serving a wide range of Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb and Specially Selected Pork dishes and tasters while supporting the demonstration chefs on the QMS stand.   

Curriculum Manager for Culinary Arts, Lindsey Robertson, was delighted that the students were able to take part in the event this year and gain some valuable experience. Said Lindsey: “Our four students did a great job and gained some fantastic experience over the weekend. The Highland Show is a wonderful event to be involved with enabling the students, who have all just completed courses with us, to develop their knowledge and skills.

“The experience also gave the students an insight in to Scotland's Red Meat Industry and the Hospitality Industry in general, alongside finding out more about what is expected of chefs to make a food operation run smoothly. I am very proud of their achievements and the professional way in which they represented Fife College and would like to thanks QMS for the opportunity.”

Carol McLaren, QMS Director of Marketing and Communications, said: “The four Fife College students did a fantastic job in the kitchen which is the hub of our stand and are a credit to the College. The students were extremely professional and enthusiastic at the event, rising to every challenge we presented them with and playing a key part in the great experience visitors to our stand enjoyed. We look forward to working with the students and staff again in the near future.”

All of the students studied at the St Brycedale Campus in Kirkcaldy, Eilidh and Terri have completed NC Professional Cookery while Sadie and Ben have completed HNC Professional Cookery.

All students studying culinary arts courses at Fife College are given the opportunity to take part in a wide range of internal and external events during their course to give them the experience they need to help improve future study and career options.
